What is Upward Basketball?
Upward Basketball is an evangelistic sports
ministry specifically designed for 1st grade thru sixth grade boys and
girls. Upward promotes salvation, character and self-esteem in every
child.
Why Upward Basketball?
Upward provides opportunities for volunteers
from all walks of life to become meaningfully involved in the ministry
of training young people in our community. Volunteers have the
opportunity to pray for young people, coach a team, referee a game,
share a devotion, and develop relationships in order to open avenues of
ministry to the young people of our community.
When is Upward Basketball?
Games:Upward Basketball games are
played at the Derby First Christian Church Powerhouse, 302 North Georgie,
Derby, Ks. Games are held on Saturdays beginning at 9:00am. The "season"
runs from the first Saturday in January thru the last Saturday in
February. The season finale will be an Awards Ceremony for girls and for boys.
Practice: Coaches organize practices
which last approx. 50 minutes
in length. Practice sessions include a 10 minute "devotion time" of
teaching about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Players are asked to study weekly in preparation for
practice, to include memorizing a memory verse each week.
How does Upward Basketball work?
Fliers announcing the upcoming Upward season
were distributed in area schools 4 weeks prior to the season. Team are
formed after each player is evaluated on their basketball skills. The
purpose of the evaluations is to ensure equality on each team and that
teams are formed on the basis of ability, not popularity. Once the
evaluations are complete and teams are formed, practices begin.
